Lumley's personal plea to Boris fuels lobby claims for controversial £175m Garden Bridge
A handwritten note from Joanna Lumley was all it took to entice the Mayor of London to consider the whimsical idea of a Garden Bridge in 2012. The shrub-lined path with very little green space has been rushed through the planning process at an alarming rate and Boris Johnson has been left to account for the hasty decisions that perhaps his deputy Edward Lister and TfL, put in place.
Lumley’s confession that Thomas Heatherwick was already involved highlights the dodgy procurement process that TfL undertook to appoint his studio to design the bridge. And the fact that a cycle path was originally in the plan but then rejected so quickly without proper public consultation demonstrates incredibly poor value for money for this ill-conceived vanity project.
